VOLUNTEERING

The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others.- DeAnn Hollis

Sometimes sitting on the sidelines just isn't enough.  If you or someone you know is looking to volunteer helping a team or spending some time on the field for a game, below are some positions that are always welcomed:

Sticks- Each team is required to provide 3 adults to do sticks during each home game; 2 chain crew and 1 down marker. No experience necessary as Referees will guide volunteers throughout the game. If you are short on volunteers this is one position that can easily be filled by spectators in the stands if need be; just have the announcer mention it over the PA. Volunteers need to be on the field for the start of the game.

50/50 and Raffle Sales- Each team is to provide 1-2 adults to sell 50/50 and raffle tickets throughout their home game. The ticket sales start at the beginning of the game and end with five minutes left in the fourth quarter. The progress is different this year and detailed instructions will be provided closer to the season.

Concession- Each team is to have 3 volunteers to work in the concession. If you have enough volunteers on your team you are able to split the shifts (3 parents for the first half of the game and 3 parents for the second half of the game). It is helpful to have the same people work in the concession so the concession manager does not have to keep training new people. Volunteers for this position are to report at the end of the previous game to relieve the other teams parents (so 10-15 minutes before game time).

Barbeque- Each team is required to have one volunteer run the BBQ during their home game. The BBQ should be set up by the clothing table outside the concession. Volunteers for this position are to report at the end of the previous game to relieve the other teams parents (so 10-15 minutes before game time).

Field Set up- This position is for the team that plays first on game day. Some teams never need to have this position filled while others may need to set up the field a few times through out the season. This position includes setting up yard markers, making sure sticks are on the field, making sure pads are on the uprights, setting up the commissioners table, setting up the clothing table and merchandise, setting up a table for raffle sales (if needed), setting up tents, etc. There will be a field manager at the field to guide you where and how things are done. This position is also responsible for setting up the Giants helmet on Friday night light games. Volunteers for this position should be on the field getting ready 30-45 minutes prior to the start of the game to ensure everything is set up in time.

Field Clean up- This position is for the team that plays the last game of the day. Some teams will never need to have this position filled and this position usually falls on the Bantam/Midget teams. This position will need to ensure all the field gear is put away properly and all the garbage is cleaned up from the stands and team benches. NO ONE from the team is allowed to leave until this has been done; this includes coaching staff and players!

Garbage pick up- This position is for 1 volunteer to make sure the stands are kept clean and tidy. A garbage grabber and bags can be obtained from the concession. Volunteers are to report for this position at the beginning of the game.

Announcer- Each team is to provide 1 adult for this position to announce their home games. Volunteers for this position should report to the tower at the end of the previous game.

Score and Time Keeper- Each team is required to have one adult to keep score and run the time clock during the home game. The official time is always kept by the Referees on the field. Volunteers for this position are to report to the tower at the end of the previous game.

Commissioner- Each team is to provide 1 adult for each home game for this position; preferably the same person each game. This person is in charge of the field during the game. Responsibilities are making sure that the kicking tee is on/off the field, marking scores, keeping track of penalties, making sure that the only ones on the field are coaches, players and referees for that game and making sure players and coaches keep to their own area. There is a briefcase with forms, samples, examples, etc of what needs to be completed. This is a very important position!! Please ensure it is filled with a parent that will be able to be present at each home game. The commissioner is set up in between the team benches and should be on the field in place prior to the game (ideally during warm ups to review paperwork, etc)

Ten Play Rule- Each team is required to provide 2-10 play rule volunteers. One will need to keep track of plays at the home bench and one for the away bench. This needs to be done for both home and away games so this position may need to get split up between a few sets of parents. This position involves documenting the amount of plays each player has to ensure each player has at least 10 plays per game. You will be standing by the team bench with a volunteer from the opposing team recording the information. This position is only required for Atom, Peewee and JB. Volunteers for this position will need to be on the field prior to the start of the game (ideally during warm up)

SWAG Tent- Each team is required to have 1 volunteer man the clothing table during their home game. This volunteer will be responsible for selling Giants merchandise. Volunteers for this position should report to the clothing table at the end of the previous game.
